These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.

Hebrews 11:39

I am worn out from groaning; all night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears.

Psalm 6:5

Home

In a fallen world, we sometimes sink under the weight of human misery, ours and those around us.

After two miscarriages in nine months, Robin, age 41, is left with a lot of unanswered questions. But she understands that this is not a perfect world. It’s a world of groaning (Psalm 6:6; Romans 8:22–23). A world where the unimaginable and the unexplainable are everyday realities.

Does faith make a difference? In Hebrews 11 in the New Testament, the heroes of the faith of the Old Testament are given honorable mention. People like Noah. Moses. Abraham. Some of these believers, it says, were stoned to death. Others put to the sword. Flogged. Mocked. And mistreated. They didn’t have it easy. Apparently, their acts of faith didn’t shield them from earthly suffering.

It takes an unheard of trust in an unseen God.

Even for these heroes of the faith, there was something their faith couldn’t lay hold of in this life.

Such is the tension between our faith and unanswered prayers—our screams and God’s perceived silence.

During our time of grief we are called to a noble surrender to the only One who truly understands our situation.
